South Africa Guide, National Parks Guy

Flowers, sea, islands, dunes and lagoons, West Coast National Park is a key conservation area for wetland habitats. Through the expansion of the park from 1973, today it incorporates many wetland ecosystems and dune environments. The saltmarshes are you unique to Langebaan as there is no river that feeds into the lagoon, supporting 71 different marine algae.

In summer this is a birders paradise as birds flock to rear their young in the lagoon. From Cape Cormorants to Waders you will be transfixed looking at the bird life here. I am sure if you threw your camera in the air and set it to take a picture it would capture some species of bird regardless of where you were in the West Coast National Park.

What should be important to note is that these wetlands have, according to SANParks, a “50% irreplaceability rating” and should be regarded of higher conservation value due to the invasion of alien plant species. Make West Coast National Park a place to be kept and preserved for future generations!
