Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in South Africa

South Africa Guide, National Parks Guy

As a UNESCO World heritage site, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a National Park AND Transfrontier park I am sure you’ll want to visit. Desert, Boulders and a flowering season to make the best fashion houses in Italy jealous. Roads are really for 4×4 travel, so be prepared to see the park at its best. A unique facet of this park is that it is communally owned and managed.

The Nama people have live here and still construct their portable rush-mat homes. They use many of the plants for medicinal and traditional purposes and regularly move through the land searching for grazing pastures and seasonal migrations. With the agreement between Namibia and South Africa in 2003, the Transfrontier park became a cross border triumph that protected over 592 000ha of land. There are plans to extend the park all the way from south Africa, up along Namibia’s coast through to Angola which will create a superb environment for delicate eco-systems that are under threat.

People come to |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park for many things: The Flower displays, the 4×4 trails and the vast open landscapes where temperatures can reach up to 53deg C in the summer! There is also the 5 day, 200km Wild Run event that will take running to a whole new level.
