South Africa Guide, National Parks Guy

When you hear of the “Valley of Desolation” it conjures up images of worlds apart from ours, but at the Camdeboo National Park you are in a world away from the world. Set high in the Sneeuberg Range, this National Park straddles many extremes and offers some amazing sights from the erosion of time.

The gems within this reserve are obviously the diverse plant and animal life, but evidence of middle and later stone age people can be found here too. The ambitions for Camdeboo National Park are vast too as the South African National Parks board is trying to create a mega-conservation area by joining two National parks together to create over 520 000 ha of Nature wild land.

You can find some rock painting here too.(ask nicely!) Set near Graaff-Reinet, you can find amazing geological rock formations, the dolerite, which is of particular interest is as erosion has left behind giant pinnacles to gaze upon. Look out for South Africa’s Symbolic animal, the Springbok which graze here happily, regardless of the extremes of this semi arid area.
