Aggyol National Park is set around Aggyol Lake in Azerbaijan and is home to thousands of breeding and migratory birds. This is the bird haven of Azerbaijan! Aggyol National Park (Also Ağgöl Milli Parkı) has been a bird sanctuary in one form or another since 1964 when the first few hectares were laid out. Since then the sanctuary has been extended and since 2003, has become a National Park.
The area is part of a vast flood plain in the Kura lowland making the ideal location for waders and waters birds. The areas surrounding the wetlands are covered in broad belt reed beds encouraging many species of birds to shelter in the vegetation.
The area has become highly significant in protecting the endangered bird species on the IUCN list that frequent the area. The Lesser White-Headed Duck, Marbled Duck, pelicans, herons and various other waders and geese. Other wildlife you may happen to glimpse are the wolf, jackal and Reed Cat. Although since 1960 there have not been many sightings, there were Goitred Gazelles in the National Park too.
