South Downs National Park website says:
A rich tapestry of wildlife, landscapes, tranquillity and visitor attractions, weave together a story of people and place in harmony
http://www.southdowns.gov.uk/discover – 09/03/2016
This is exactly what the South Downs represents. It is squeezed into an area that has a number of bustling cities and towns, has rolling hills and valleys and manages to touch the sea too. This is a place that you see “people and place in harmony”.
South Downs National Park is relatively new in designation, only coming into existence formally in 2011 and is laid on chalk and hosts wooded sandstone and clay hills too. If you like your walking, then the South Downs Way, which covers the entire park, is one you may be interested in. The path will certainly take you past Beachy Head, a chalk cliff 162m high with great views over the the East Sussex coast. You’ll see the Beachy Head Lighthouse below too.
There are plenty of activities to choose from. The South Down National Park Discovery Map give a great deal of locations to visit on your wander around the area. Their events calender will also have you busy, with a New Spring Ale Showcase in March, Guided walks and Easter trails, as well as a narrow gauge railway, all offer something for everyone.
For the more active, there is a variety of cycling trails and paths as well as horse riding and geocaching – which I highly recommend you get involved in anyway! You will never be far from somewhere to stay or get a cup of tea, but the beauty of the South Downs National Park is seeing how people and nature can co-exist together and both benefit!
