Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria
Videos | Gallery | Unexplored | Stories
Hohe Tauern National Park is literally a shining gem in Austria! This wonderful landscape follows it’s name High (Hohe) Mountains. With nearly 100 km from end to end, there is plenty of walking and climbing to do here. If you like mountain climbing, then the Grossglockner, at 3 798m, will be on your list to climb!
Hohe Tauern is Austria’s largest National Park and cover 3 states, Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, and has complete protection from agricultural use, and only a small part dedicated to forestry and farming. The prize is seeing glaciers, alluvial fans and Krimml Waterfalls.
The wildlife to watch out for is amusingly named the “Big 5”. (Similar to South Africa‘s Big 5 naming but with smaller animals) The “Big 5” are the Ibex, Golden Eagle, Chamoix, Griffon Vulture and the re-introduced Bearded Vulture. Look out in summer too for the flower plants and meadows of Orchids.
The introductory guide offered by Hohe Tauern National Park is a very useful introduction to what you can expect here.
