Sevan National Park is a huge wetlands area stretching for 150 100 ha, surrounded by mountains and lies at a height of 1900m above sea level. Known as the “Blue Pearl” or “Mountain Mirror”, Lake Sevan is a major water supply for Yerevan and attracts many tourists and fishermen. The importance of this landscape is being damaged however, and new steps are being taken to try to return this area of special interest back to its former state. Sevan National Park has been around since 1978 and is home to numerous nesting birds as well as migratory birds. This is a RAMSAR site, but as will be noted, the height of the lake has be artificially raise over the last few years by 3m to increase water reserves but also adds to organic polution from rotting vegetation.
Around the Lake there are plenty of monuments to see and much to do in the area as it is located not far from Yerevan. Being surrounded by mountains, the light is always changing as the seasons progress, and there are huge basalt cliffs and cracked magma deposits to explore. Civilization has existed here since the Bronze age!
Due to accessibility, Sevan National Park is a place where bird watching, butterfly viewing and landscape views mixed with visits to ancient sites can all be done with relative ease.
