Arevik National Park opened in 2010 and according to N1465-N decree of December 2013 of the RA Government, Arevik National Park forms part of the Zangezur Biosphere Complex which protect and area of 79 660 ha. Arevik is important for it’s preservation of butterfly species and mammals and for the first time in over 60 years Striped Hyena were spotted in the mountains.
This National Park combines a varied landscape from semi desert to alpine meadows and the protection of rare and endangered species is of high importance here. The Bezoar Goat (Capra aegagrus) and Mouflon (Ovis orientalis) are in the vulnerable category of the IUCN Red list due to hunting, poaching and habitat destruction. It inhabits high mountainous regions with rocky outcrops.
Arevik National Park is also important to butterfly enthusiasts. An area where seven species of butterfly, such as the Skipper Gegenes nostrodamus and Copper Athamanthia phoenicura, can only be observed in Armenia. There are many walking trails through the park and is one of the few areas still considered “wild” in Armenia.
The park is also home to some 180 different species of bird which should motivate any visitor to the Arevik National Park to bring their binocular and possibly sight some of the rare ones. The Lammergyer and Egyptian Vulture to name a few. There are also plenty of monument in the area to visit while in the area too.
