Donau-Auen National Park is easily found as it lies just outside of Vienna and will make for a short break if you are in town(Directions). Really, Austria is a place where nature surrounds you but even so, to be in a National Park that goes even further to protect it’s wildlife and nature is worth visiting. There are many options to explore Donau-Auen National Park, you can go by car, bike or better still, quietly slip through the water in a boat to see the bird life up close.
Donau-Auen National Park has plenty of walking routes and paths throughout the park and opportunity to get close to nature. There are forests in and around the area and this part of the Danube is the last free flowing part of the river, allowing for fish and bird life to continue naturally.
Look out for the beaver and Kingfishers which live in the area. In the springtime many endangered birds come here to nest in the gravel areas such as the Little Ringed Plover and Common Sandpiper.
A park which is close to a major city, easily accessible and may even have the opportunity of a canoe ride along these special waters, it might be just the place to go!
