Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in United States of America
Videos | Gallery | Unexplored | Reviews
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, USA – Western Colorado, is named because it receives so little light during the day. In fact in parts it is less than an hour. This is a canyon which falls rapidly into the depths of sheer cliffs and closes anyone in.
This national park, at 13 334 ha is only part of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison river, and is lovingly protected both before it and after it by another two wilderness areas. So if you are in the vicinity check out Curecanti National Recreation Area and Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area while you are at it.
Over 2 million years, water has eroded the stone and soil to form the steepest cliffs in America. This is not your average canyon, but a monument to the power of water and the sheer strength of rock to hold its shape with such acute angles!
The history here is of equal importance. People avoided it due to superstitions, a railroad was suggested to run through it for scenic benefit, but abandoned and a dangerous diversion tunnel was built to bring water to Uncompahgre Valley took over 4 years to build.
If you are going for a hike here, make sure you are healthy! It is steep and not your normal amble across and level plain, but the feeling and excitement should give the most experience hiker a thrill at the very least!
